The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists?(verse 11a)
I remember well my evangelism course in Bible school. We were sent out in pairs to knock on three random doors and share the plan of salvation with perfect strangers. As coincidence (or God’s sense of humour) would have it, the first two houses were inhabited by well-versed adherents to other faiths who “destroyed” me and my partner. By the time we gathered our courage to knock on the third door, we barely knew our names let alone the plan of salvation. Thankfully, a senior Christian lady welcomed us in, offered us some milk and cookies, and provided safe haven for two young shell-shocked evangelists.
As Christians, each of us is called to share the good news (evangel) of Jesus, so in that sense, we’re all evangelists. In reading today’s text, however, we find that not all have the particular gift of evangelism that we might associate with those like Billy Graham.
It might be debated if knocking on random doors is the best way to share the evangel or bring others the plan of salvation, but whatever the case, God has gifted each of us for the equipping of the saints and the work of ministry. So let’s get busy and put those gifts to use.
Lord, thanks for your gifts and those who share them. Amen. — ACS
