Sunday December 7th, 2014 2nd Sunday of Advent Mark 1:1-8
John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. (verse 4)
During the season before Christmas, we are inundated with advertisements, all offering us opportunities to purchase the perfect gifts for everyone on our list. They often make us think that we need to run out and buy what they are offering or we will miss out on a great deal. We see and hear so many ads that they become less meaningful and we just stop listening.
John the baptizer is an advertisement of a different nature. He doesn’t make a bunch of empty promises. He is offering us the deal of a lifetime, one that we do not want to miss. He is offering us a baptism for forgiveness of sins. He is preparing the way for a saviour of great power who will give us the Holy Spirit.
This is an advertisement we will never tire of hearing and we need to run out and accept what is being offered!
Powerful Lord, let me accept the gift of the spirit, divine, because then I know, that forgiveness is mine. Amen. — BZ
