Wednesday November 12th, 2014 Matthew 24:1-14
"...what will be the sign of your coming...?" (verse 3b)
As I write these words it is early April and the first crocuses have finally sprouted in Saskatoon. In other places the crocuses have already finished blooming. This famous harbinger of spring does not display the same sign everywhere in Canada at the same time.
The disciples asked Jesus what signs they should look for to signal the coming of the end of the age. The answer Jesus gave them included rumours of wars, famines and earthquakes. The disciples that were still alive in 70 CE witnessed the destruction of the Temple by Rome.
As you read these words it is November and the signs of the coming winter are around us. The signs of the “end of the age” can also be seen. Generation after generation has looked at Matthew 24 and seen the signs coming true in their lifetime. Some have responded by selling everything that they own and gathering with others of like mind to wait for the end. We could do the same, or like the disciples we can continue to share our faith in our own neighbourhoods and through agencies such as Canadian Lutheran World Relief and The Lutheran World Federation. We, like the disciples, can share our faith around the world.
Eternal God, form us into signs of hope for the world. Amen. — VSR
