Sound the Alarm

Most every house or apartment in Canada has a smoke detector. We have these devices to protect ourselves and our family, to warn us should there be a fire. Whether wired in or battery operated, the manufacturer and the fire department recommend that the operation of your smoke detector be checked every month. These detectors go off when they detect a certain level of smoke in your home. It is a very low threshold. Burnt toast has been known to set it off in my home.

The prophet Micah in the scripture reading for today is like our smoke detector. Micah is charged by the Lord God to sound the alarm among God’s people. God unequivocally desires equal care and justice for all people. Micah sounds the alarm because there has become a disparity between the haves and the have-nots, and it seems the religious leaders are not speaking up, so Micah does.

God calls us to be the smoke detector in our time as well, speaking out against injustice and inequality.

Holy God, open our eyes to see the injustice and inequality around us and give us courage to sound the alarm. Amen. — LH
