Be Bold! Ask!

When God asked Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, Moses tried getting out of the job. He thought he was unworthy. God did not let Moses off the hook. And as time passed, Moses gained confidence.

Just prior to the conversation we read today, the people of Israel had sinned. God became angry and told the people that instead of God’s divine presence going with them, an angel would accompany them. Moses is bold with God, asking God to relient and to continue to accompany the people. Moses reminded God that God had found favour with him, and that God’s presence with the Israelites was what gave them distinction among the other nations.

How does God respond? God relents. God’s compassion and mercy are revealed anew to Moses. God promises to pass by Moses so that Moses can see the back of God (to see God’s face would cause death.) What a great God! Full of compassion, mercy and love, God renews the relationship with Moses and the Israelites.

God’s same compassion, mercy and love are ours to experience today. We can boldly ask God to reveal the same qualities in our relationship, knowing that even before we ask, we will see God’s goodness go before us.

Help us to ask you for what we need, O God. Amen. — DB
