Let me sing for my beloved my love-song concerning his vineyard? (verse 1a)
When we get what we deserve there’s no surprise. That’s the way I felt for a few horribly long moments as my friend judged my comments for what they were. I’d given him back a completely unnecessary and thoughtless put-down in exchange for nothing but helpful comments and actions from him. Those were some of the worst moments I’ve known. There was justice in them. His was righteous indignation for sure.
But then he spoke, as if I’d said nothing out of turn, and a smile returned to his face. It wasn’t, as I’d have preferred, that he didn’t hear me or didn’t know. It was that he knew God’s love much better than I.
Dear Lord, surprise us with your love. We need it each day. Be true, we pray, to your nature so that we may reclaim ours. Amen. — EB
