Life isn’t Fait

Having a sister, “Life isn’t fair,” came out of my parents mouths often when I complained, “That’s not fair.” No matter how we behaved, when my parents did something nice for me they did the same for my sister.

How often do we get upset when someone is treated the same as us even if we think they don’t deserve it?

I remember hearing a story of a person who worked really hard to get into university. This person’s grandparents decided to give her enough money to cover the cost of tuition and books. The grandparents then gave her brother the same amount of money just to be fair. He had no plans to go to university, and was irresponsible with money. “That’s not fair,” she said.

Jesus shares a parable with us about a landowner who generously gives to his employees. Like us with our siblings, some employees get angry when others who didn’t work as long receive the same wage. The landowner reminds them that if he wants to give generously to others, why should they care?

There are no partiality with God. God gives graciously to all. Instead of being upset over God’s choice to be gracious, maybe we should rejoice that God shows the same love to everyone.

Loving God, thank you for extending your love and righteousness to all. Amen. — WHB
