What is the Spirit saying to the churches today? Do we have ears open enough to hear what the Spirit is telling us? I wonder if the Spirit is saying, “Don’t be tied to 16th century theology alone,” or perhaps, “Don’t rely only on 4th century creeds and doctrines!” If we really are to listen to the Spirit, I mean really open our hearts and minds up to what God the Spirit is saying to us now, it just might be “Open yourself to theologies of the 21st century.” Or just maybe God the Spirit is saying, “Make 21st century beliefs your creed.”

Could it be that the Spirit of God is speaking to us and we just can’t hear clearly? Are our preoccupations with buildings, salaries and the status quo interfering with our hearing? Our preachers and theologians are called on now, in this time and in this place, to help us hear what the Spirit of God is saying to us. It might be words like feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the sick, comfort the mourning and free prisoners. Maybe, just maybe, God the Spirit is calling us to something we cannot imagine!

Lord God, open our ears to hear you speaking to us here and now. Amen. — KJB
