Facebook and LinkedIn are but two examples of social media through which users create and share everything from quotes and quips to motivational thoughts. I have lost count of the number of times that I have come across similar messages, worded slightly differently and attributed to different authors, but ultimately the same message in different words. It is as if we need to have it repeated and remixed for us. That is today.
Not that long ago, in my recent memory, it was wall posters that hung on our walls with grandiose visuals of mountain ranges and calm waters. I am sure that if I were to ask others what other media and channels surrounded them, the list would grow. Everything from billboards with advertising, to metaphors and analogies would likely be included.
And before that there was the Bible. Oh, funny enough, there is still the Bible! It is filled with the original words and stories and yet how is it that we don’t or can’t hear them? Today’s reading includes a number of Jesus’ parables that, interestingly, even he, too, had to remix.
What does it mean? Much has changed over time and yet little has really changed.
Dear Lord, you have given me the gift of your words. I pray that I am open to hearing them. Amen. — DR
