"The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed." (verse 20)
Many times we have been told some news, either happy or sad, that is so hard to believe that we keep asking to hear it over and over, then responding that we just can’t believe it. We seem to need more proof before we can believe.
We are like the Pharisees to whom Jesus is speaking. Despite all the signs and stories that Jesus had given them: “The Dishonest Manager,” “The Prodigal and His Brother,” (or should we say “The Loving Father”), “The Rich Man and Lazarus,” “Cleansing the Ten Lepers”-these Pharisees kept asking; kept doubting.
As we read through these verses, Jesus is giving us many signs to recognize that the kingdom of God is among us. Jesus reminds us of Noah and Lot, who both escaped destruction, Noah because of his obedience and Lot because angels convinced him to leave Sodom. Are we so preoccupied with our lives that we do not recognize that the kingdom of God is among us? When the judgment comes, it will be swift (read verses 30-36). We will have no time to react-no time to pack our bags. Something to ponder.
Gracious God, forgive our doubting. Help us to listen to your word. Amen. — DMF
