We live in a consumer society and seem to forget about everyone and everything except ourselves. We do not just eat, but rather we stuff ourselves. We do not just buy new fashionable clothes, but we discard the clothes we consider to be out of style. We work hard, we tell ourselves, so we deserve something a bit special. We say it’s just a little lie and not hurting anyone. We tell ourselves that everyone cheats a bit and that’s just how society operates.
Yet deep down we know that we are wandering, adrift. We are seeking something…someone who will provide all we really need. More than bread. More than clothes. More than a self-help book. Help to stop our endless wandering.
God alone can save us from ourselves. The prophet Amos told the people to return to God, yet the people continued to wander aimlessly.
Do we wander aimlessly, seeking only those things which momentarily satisfy? When will we stop and really hear prophets like Amos speaking to us?
Gracious God, in all our dealings with our siblings, may we be fair and just. In all our searching for you, may we find you and be glad. Amen. —
