What a powerful gift from Jesus! What a historic day this is in our Lutheran heritage. We are on the eve of celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. God gave Martin Luther extraordinary strength and courage to stand up for this freedom by nailing the 95 theses to Castle Church door. Only faith in God’s grace could give one person this kind of determination. Our Lutheran church was born and lives today to declare freedom to be part of a very unique step of faith into the future.
On October 31, Pope Francis, Lutheran World Federation President Bishop Younan and Secretary Junge will lead a joint ecumenical Commemoration of the Reformation in Lund, Sweden, which will include a common worship based on a very recent publication, the Catholic-Lutheran Common Prayer liturgical guide. To do our part, the ELCIC has called us to celebrate the Reformation with several challenges. Each of us is working to continue a conversation about the freedom given by the Son.
Oh God of power and might, you have blessed us with the freedom to believe in justice and the courage to hope for peace and reconciliation. Amen. — BLSO
