Potholes or pavement

Hospital waiting rooms are places where interesting conversations begin with the mutual ground of anxiety and boredom. Being a communicator, I began a conversation with a gentleman from a nearby town who was waiting for someone having surgery, just as I was. Asking how his community was, he declared, “Great, except for the streets.” Noting my curious expression, he continued, “My hometown was built on marshland, a soggy weak foundation that makes a poor roadbed and causes a ton of potholes. I seem to sink into one every day.”

When Peter declares Jesus as the Messiah, Jesus recognizes the strength of Peter adding, “on this rock, I will build my church.” Peter, as an early church leader, was the first building stone in the Christian church. But even Peter, as a building rock, needed a foundation. 1 Corinthians 3:11 says it best. “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.” Jesus, our Messiah, our Saviour, is our foundation on which we build, our solid ground in the marshland of life.

God, help us be building rocks in our homes, church, community with Jesus as our solid foundation. Amen.
