?and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. (verse 12)
How often do we wake up in the middle of the night and lie there, waiting impatiently for sleep to take hold of us once again? Perhaps we need to approach these moments with different expectations. In our world, so full of sounds and noise, maybe we need a time like the dead of night to experience the sheer silence that Elijah did when he heard God’s voice. Maybe we need to take these opportunities to speak to God and also to listen to what God is saying to us. God can have our complete attention if we allow ourselves to clear our minds from the worries that often accompany our midnight awakenings.
I have a friend who once told me that she would use this time to pray to God. What a perfect opportunity to turn our thoughts away from ourselves and to have a conversation with God.
Almighty God, help us to listen; help us to clear our minds so that we might hear you more clearly and follow your instructions for our lives. Amen. — SD
