"How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!" (verse 37)
What is a favourite word of most two-year-olds? The word “no,” except when offered something they like. Jesus desired to gather God’s children as a brood under wing, but they were too good at saying “No.”
What about us? How do we respond to the call of Christ to come near? Perhaps “no” is not clearly said. We just don’t respond or gather with the rest of God’s children because we are occupied with other things. Perhaps we do not feel the need for divine protection and closeness. Yet without Jesus’ shelter and guidance, he warns that we will wind up in a state of desolation. Christ prefers us not to have to live in such a condition, offering a far better alternative. As a hen, Jesus extends a wing, extends himself upon a cross, calling for us to find refuge and comfort there.
Let us willingly, quickly and gladly answer Christ’s call and find our place among the flock gathered under Jesus’ great wing. May his consolation cover our lives, granting us comfort and peace.
Thank you, Jesus, for your invitation of protection offered under your great wing and cross, and for the consolation you offer us there. Amen. — JW-H
