Elijah loves challenges! Firstly, he challenges the people to make a choice: God or Baal. Secondly, he totally takes on the underdog archetype by being one prophet against 450 Baal prophets, lets the challengers pick the bull first, and lets them call on their god first. It doesn’t stop there; from rubble Elijah builds an altar with a wide trench and pours water over everything. And Elijah is expecting God to set all this on fire? This just shows how deep Elijah’s trust is in God.

Our choices, even in the smallest ways, matter. They point to our awareness level in our choice making. Pay attention to your reaction to certain people or a comment being made. Your reaction is a choice. Is the response automatic? Or can one take a moment to reflect before responding?

We also make choices unaware of our underlying fear or need to control. Experiment with some choices and test your trust level in God. Make a choice when everything is not in place. Did everything turn out okay? Even if the outcome was not the one hoped for, did you catch the lesson God was trying to teach? There is always something good to find.

Dear God, please guide my choices with a new awareness and teach me to trust in your ways. Amen. — BLR
