Wednesday October 14th, 2015 Psalm 104:1-9,24,35c
O LORD , how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. (verse 24)
Psalm 104 is a beautiful song praising God the creator. When I read this psalm, I think of two hymns: “Oh, Worship the King,” (Evangelical Lutheran Worship [EvLW] #842), which is based on Psalm 104, and “For the Beauty of the Earth,” (EvLW #879). There are, of course, countless other songs and hymns in praise of God the creator, which communicate a sense of awe, wonder and reverence in relation to God’s creation.
In Psalm 104, the writer alludes to the Genesis creation and flood accounts, and expresses a deep reverence for how wonderfully God has ordered creation. When we contemplate the vastness of the universe, along with the complexity of how everything in creation functions and is so intricately connected and created, are we, like the psalmist, not filled with awe, wonder and reverence?
Today, if possible, enjoy a short walk or longer hike, sit under a tree, watch a sunrise or sunset, listen to a flock of serenading birds, paddle a canoe, smell the flowers, and prayerfully write or sing a song or hymn of praise to God the creator.
We praise and thank you, triune God, for your creativity and love filling the whole universe. Amen. — GW-H
