Sunday June 14th, 2015 3rd Sunday after Pentecost Mark 4:26-34
"It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth." (verse 31)
My front yard is one large garden. Gone are the white rock and red rock. Gone are the lawn and other shrubs. The only thing left standing is a small tree that is technically on city land. Everything in the front yard is producing food that is edible and put into canning.
Setting up the garden was pretty easy. Learning about gardening was easy with the Internet. Voles and weeds can be kept at bay with vigilance and traps.
Here is the shocking part about front yard gardening: neighbours and stories. People can’t help but stop and look at the garden. Produce starts to be exchanged. Names are learned. Starting a front yard garden is the most evangelical thing I’ve ever done!
In the parable of the kingdom of God as a mustard seed, we see that the kingdom of God is going to spread like a mustard plant, which is actually hard to stop once it’s growing.
Meditate today on where the kingdom of God is popping up in your life.
Creating God, you call forth life from dirt. Open our eyes to where your kingdom is growing, and help us to nurture and join in with awesome wonder. Amen. — SB
