Tuesday May 12th, 2015 1 John 5:9-13
And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. (verse 11)
Have you ever watched a sporting event and noticed someone in the crowd holding up a sign with the phrase “John 3:16” boldly printed upon it. The sign, of course, refers to the familiar biblical passage, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” The folks who hold up those signs are said to drive the television director and camera crew to distraction. The crew tries hard to avoid the signs, and those holding the signs try just as hard to appear on air.
Those with the signs are sharing testimony to God’s love as shown in God’s Son, Jesus. And that’s the testimony we find in our reading today, not human but God’s testimony.
Today’s reading expands upon those treasured words contained in John 3:16, the verse many have called the heart of the gospel or even the Little Gospel. Through faith we also are able to lay claim to the scriptural promise of eternal life.
Almighty God, I give you thanks for the gift of eternal life that is mine through your Son, Jesus Christ, my Lord and Saviour. Amen. — JRG
