Friday February 20th, 2015 Psalm 25:1-10
Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness' sake, O LORD! (verse 7)
How many times do we think of the foolish choices we’ve made in the past-the sins of our youth-or more recent transgressions? So often we remember them with guilt, shame and deep remorse. Yet that is not how God remembers them. That is not how God remembers us.
In this verse, David asked God to remember him according to God’s steadfast love, for God’s goodness’ sake. David had made some huge sinful choices. He had an affair with a married woman, then orchestrated the army’s activities so that her husband would die on the front lines. Guilty of adultery and murder, David surely must have struggled with guilt, remorse and shame.
David refers to God’s love as steadfast. The dictionary defines the word as meaning “very devoted or loyal to a person, belief or cause; not changing.”
God is very devoted and loyal to us, the children of God. God’s love is unchanging. What an amazing thought! Knowing God remains loving and faithful should give us boldness to come to God and experience that unchanging, matchless love.
God, remind me of your love and faithfulness, especially during those times when I am tempted to withdraw from you because of my guilt or shame. Amen. — KDG
