The child grew and became strong? (verse 40)
When my children were born, I remember thinking what would life be like for them. As a parent, I knew it was my responsibility to raise them and teach them how to live in our society. We would teach them what is good and what is bad. But, in the end, we also knew that they would learn from the mistakes and poor judgments they would make from time to time. We could only teach them so much. We prayed that they would grow up wise and strong.
In our reading, we have a similar story of how Joseph and Mary were bringing up their child Jesus. It was a custom to bring their child to the temple to be presented to the Lord, almost as when we decide to have our child baptized. When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple, there was a righteous man, Simeon, and a prophet, Anna, who upon seeing the baby Jesus said great things about him.
Parents are given the important task of raising children. I believe that with the help of God, along with the help of other righteous people, our children will grow up wise and strong, for we all are children of God.
God of wisdom, help our children grow with love, wisdom and strength. Amen. — RW
