They were busy years. During the years raising our son and two daughters, my husband and I tried to model and teach Christian values and beliefs in our home every day. We felt it was important to do so.
And when doing this, we also felt we were, in essence, “sharing the good news,” just like Jesus and his disciples did so many, many years ago. Disciples like Simon, Andrew, James and John, simple fishermen chosen by Jesus to model and share values and beliefs. Parents, like these four disciples, are also chosen to teach and share the good news to the best of their ability.
Attending church and taking confirmation instruction during their growing-up years helped our children better understand the good news, God’s promises to God’s people. As parents, we were there to support our children during those times.
The good news hasn’t changed. In Jesus’ time it encompassed the good news of peace, of hope, of everlasting life, of salvation and of truth. These remain steadfast today.
One day, we hope to be blessed in becoming grandparents and being chosen and able to “share the good news” with our grandchildren.
Dear God, let us remember that we can share the good news with others, and especially with our children and grandchildren whom you have entrusted to us. — DD
