Reminders

I have a great memory, but it is short. I cannot begin to count the number of times I have gone to the grocery store for just a few things and come home with only two of the three things I intended to buy. It is not until I open the fridge that I realize I forgot the butter.

In all aspects of our lives, we would be well served to have reminders, something to jar our memories. In our walk of faith, we have those reminders to help keep God and God’s promises top of mind. Our devotional life, weekly worship, faith communities and prayer all serve as ways to keep God central in our lives, but it is not enough.

Joshua is speaking to a people who have, like us, many choices and distractions that would draw them away from God. His threefold questioning about who they will worship and serve admonishes us to check in regularly as to where our loyalties lie. Is the direction we are going, the choices we are making, God-directed or me-directed?

All powerful and ever-present God, direct my thoughts and my actions so that they would be always and only in worship, obedience and service to you. Forgive me when I forget. Amen. — LH
