Be the water

Recently, my kids have been very interested in Bruce Lee. It might have something to do with me frequently showing them videos of how quick, skilled and absolutely amazing he is (oh yeah, I’m pretty interested in Bruce Lee myself).

One thing about Bruce Lee’s style, and perhaps martial arts in general, that fascinates me, is how the training and practice ingrains the moves and techniques into your muscle memory. It becomes second nature and instinct in that true masters don’t even have to think about what they will do in a situation, they will just do.

God’s writing God’s word on our hearts is a bit like muscle memory. The gifts of compassion, empathy and love become second nature to us as we grow in our faith and learn more of God’s promises and God’s word. And when we encounter a situation, we don’t need to refer back to our Sunday school training, rather we just do. We do what we do because we are who we are.

As Bruce Lee doesn’t just act like a master, but is truly a master, so we don’t just act like God’s people, we are truly God’s people. We are created, called and gifted with God’s word written on our hearts, giving us identity, purpose and hope.

May we truly live as your people. Amen. — NF
