Tuesday February 19th, 2019 Jeremiah 22:11-17
He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Is not this to know me? says the LORD. (verse 16)
In my prayers, I ask for the grace to love God with my entire being, but often I zone out on the second part which asks us to love our neighbour.
It is not enough for me to attend church, to pray, do devotions and Bible study, although these are important to the Christian life. I should also be reaching out to the needy.
One can get bogged down in what God wants or doesn’t want us to do. Many of God’s commands are quite straightforward and can perhaps be summed up as such: live in a way that is pleasing to God and have compassion for others.
I greatly admire people who serve meals to the less fortunate, work in food banks, shelters or make Christmas special for a needy family. They are making a difference.
I would like to be one of those people, but I tend to stay in the background. I make some donations to those causes, give to needy folks I encounter, and of course, pray for them, but I am not personally involved.
Giving God, please enable me to be an instrument of your compassion by helping the less fortunate. Amen. — KB
