I hear hopelessness in this widow’s voice. She is down to her last handful of meal. She is convinced this will be her last meal with her child before they die of starvation. Yet, somehow, she hears and obeys Elijah. In desperation, she hears Elijah speak God’s promise, and that is all she can cling to. She takes a leap of faith.
God speaks and it happens. God orchestrated this miracle. God had provided for Elijah previously, and God is about to provide for this widow as well. God’s promise holds true: not only is Elijah fed, but this family is given enough food to last until the next rain.
God always keeps God’s promises. God promises to be faithful to God’s people. In baptism, God promises us new life. At the Lord’s table, we are promised the real presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ. When we find ourselves in those places of desperation and hopelessness, may we trust in God’s Word, for each time God speaks, it happens.
Thank you, O God, that you are faithful to your people. When I hunger, feed me with the bread of heaven. When I thirst, give me drink from the fountain of life. Remind me that when you speak, it happens. Amen. — ANS
