Saturday October 20th, 2018 Hebrews 5:1-10
?and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him? (verse 9)
In October, Public Health starts promoting the need for flu immunizations. Free in Canada, this vaccine provides protection against the strains of influenza expected to be circulating this year. Because of the ever-changing virus, no two flu seasons are the same. Therefore, vaccines are changed every year, making this an annual event. Health Canada does extensive testing to make each year’s vaccine safe and effective. But every year, the persistent, changing influenza virus rears its ugly head.
Sin is much like this virus. For protection and pardon, God appointed people from the tribe of Levi as high priests, to offer sacrifices for people’s persistent sins. But the priests, themselves, weren’t perfect, so special rituals were required to purify them. Humans were and are barraged by sin from many directions, much like a virus. God sent Jesus, the perfect Son, who became the final, perfect, living sacrifice for our sins. “And having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.” Jesus is the perfect, permanent immunization for sin. No needles required!
We confess we are captive to sin and can't free ourselves. Thanks for Jesus! Amen. — C/GW
