Friday September 21st, 2018 St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist Psalm 1
They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. (verse 3)
Another Lac du Bonnet story! This one involved Cub Scouts planting clipped off willow twigs in a ditch I dug around the Children’s Day Care playground. Because their yard flooded every spring, we took the sod from the ditch and built up the play area, and then stuck willow cuttings in the moist ditch. They soon grew into bushy trees that sheltered the children as they played. It was a win-win project all around.
How blessed are we who, like willow sticks, take root in our communities and grow up to provide shelter to the most vulnerable among us. You know who you are: you knit mittens for inner-city children, you support food banks. You volunteer for causes that make a difference. You teach students, and for many of them, you’re their last best hope for a good life. Yes, and some of you share God’s gracious and encouraging word so that your people will not wither, but live fruitful lives. You know who you are. God bless you, every one.
Lord, you give us a choice. We can make it big, or we can make a big difference. Help us to choose well. Amen. — BB
