I’ve lived my whole life in southern Ontario, part of the fifth generation growing up on our family farm. It was much later in life, on a journey through British Columbia, that I experienced the beauty of a mountain town called Hope. Some of you may know it well, but for me, I was struck with how it nestled into the mountains, protected on all sides. It felt very safe.
Trusting in God, no matter what’s going on in my life, also makes me feel safe. Safe enough to take a risk.
Our trip was a reunion, with the eastern half of my family travelling west to spend some time with those who’d moved far from their Ontario roots. It was also an opportunity to work on rebuilding some broken bridges; that felt riskier.
When I remember the steadfastness of God’s mercy and how it surrounds us like mighty mountains, hope grows in my heart. Feeling safe, it’s easier to let go of hurt feelings and open my heart once again.
God of mercy, when I'm filled with anxiety, help me to remember the steadfastness of your love and how you will always be there for me. Give me hope so that I can be an instrument of your love and bring healing. Amen. — AK
