Solomon succeeded David, his father, as king of Israel. It was a daunting role, and Solomon was keenly aware of his inability to fulfill it successfully without supernatural help. When God asked him what he would like, Solomon didn’t ask for wealth or fame. Instead, he asked for wisdom and an understanding mind. Solomon’s request pleased God. Maybe it was pleasing to God because wisdom was essential to make decisions that would most benefit those affected by Solomon’s leadership.
Perhaps that is why, in the book of James, we are told that if any of us lack wisdom, we are also to ask our benevolent God for it. God will give it to us, generously and without rebuking us. We, too, need God’s wisdom as we journey through life. Today, let us boldly ask for what Solomon asked, wisdom and an understanding mind.
Merciful and wise God, today give us the wisdom, discernment and understanding we need to make beneficial decisions for us and those we love. Amen. — KGT
