Open Our Eyes

Will you be satisfied, Philip? I’m not so sure. One of the gospel songs we love to sing begins “Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus.” I am pretty sure we don’t. Oh, yes, we want to see Jesus as we picture him in the gospel stories, or how he is depicted in one of the many epic movies that we binge upon at Easter. But how about seeing Jesus as he comes to us today? How about seeing Jesus in the faces of the people we meet each day, not only our good friends at church, but the homeless woman sitting on the street corner, the murderer on a life sentence, the “least of these”? Not so much.

Philip wanted to see God. Jesus said, you have and are and will. When you see me loving the unlovable, forgiving the unforgivable, healing the helpless, comforting the grieving, then Philip, you see the Father. And Philip, as you go and do likewise-and more-you will see and bring God’s presence into the world.

That’s our task. To reveal God to the world by continuing the works of Jesus, to the least of these and to the greatest.

Reveal yourself to us and through us, O Lord, as we work in Jesus' name in our communities. Amen. — DAB
