In Our Midst

I am writing these words at the end of September. Charlottesville has left its scar of racial division and arrogance of white supremacy. Hurricanes have ravaged Texas and the Caribbean. The shooting in Las Vegas and the multitude of victims have left us numb. You are reading these words in April, while our brothers and sisters in the faith are awestruck by Christ’s resurrection. Now and then people are gathered, trying to make sense of what is happening and what has happened in our midst. We are all looking for God’s presence.

Then we-there is no they-find God when the stranger asks for something to eat. Suddenly, Christ the resurrected is discovered in the midst of a people in turmoil and pain. Now and then Christ is where God always is, in the midst of a hurting people, supporting them and breaking bread together. The transcending God transcends time and place. God is in the midst of our confusion, asking for a bite to eat, urging us to be still, savour the fish and know that we are not alone.

God, we are not alone. Help us see in faith what we cannot see with the eye, your ever-present help in times of adversity and in times of celebration. Amen. — RDL
