For a child has been born for us, a son given to us. (verse 6)
I had never met the school counselor who was to help me decide my future-which universities to apply to. He walked into the room and said, “This is your lucky day. You get to share my cinnamon bun with me.” I knew at that moment I would be okay. Thirty-nine years since that cinnamon bun, I still remember. When life-giving righteousness is shared, it stays with you.
Why would some prophet in a harsh world of tramping warriors ever believe this word of wonderful, everlasting, mighty peace? Sometimes, for a person, a life full of peace seems far away, too far to recognize what it might be like. Maybe God lets us know that, even in the worst, God will not give up bringing us a life of peace that brings joy.
Jesus was a child in a life far away from peace. When Jesus gathered children into his arms for a blessing, maybe he knew that safe arms were hard to find. They shared a hug with Jesus and took that joy with them into life.
Maybe a shared cinnamon bun seems like a small thing. Recognizing when to share, even a bun, with someone who is far away from peace, gives God a moment to bring joy.
God, thank you for joy that comes with your peace. Amen. — BL
