Monday December 18th, 2017 2 Kings 2:9-22
As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. (verse 11)
Did Elisha wonder to see Elijah go up in flames?
Did he think of Exodus-the pillars of cloud and fire escorting God’s children to the waters of the Red Sea?
Did he foresee Pentecost-the tongues of fire guiding God’s children to the waters of baptism?
Did Elisha wonder to see the water part before him?
Did he think of Exodus-again- God’s deliverance through salt water to life?
Did he foresee Mary- her waters breaking, delivering Jesus into the world?
Elisha, the servant of the Lord, would have known: God saves through fire and water. Blessed is the Lord our God.
Thank you, God, for your Spirit that strengthens us to follow you through the flames that burn and the waters that rise, trusting that you usher us into new life. Amen. — KDH
