Sunday November 12th, 2017 23rd Sunday after Pentecost Matthew 25:1-13
"Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour." (verse 13)
This parable is about staying alert, being ready. That all sounds logical, good and fairly straightforward, but how quickly we become the foolish maidens.
World Baseball Classic 2017. A Dutch batter smacks a single, rounds first base, celebrating and urging the crowd to cheer with him. The opposing catcher, who by now has the ball, pegs a throw to first, and the batter, who was still off his base, still celebrating, is out. Or, the time when my dad told me the truck was low on gas; better fill it up before you take it to school. My response? Yeah, yeah. Made it to school fine, even a good part of the way home, but about two and a half miles from home, I rolled to a stop.
Jesus has been gone a long time, and it is hard to keep our focus, it is hard to stay alert for such a long time. It’s easy to get caught up in some highlight of life and lose focus, or to get complacent and try to run on half empty tanks.

Fill us with your Spirit of Power, Lord God, so we are always alert and ready. Amen. — DAB
