"'For this people's heart has grown dull, and their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes?'" (verse 15)
Jesus has just preached the parable of the sower and the seed. In the parable, the sower cast the seed extravagantly over good ground, rocky and thorny ground, as well as the footpath. He does not hold back the seed. The thorns choked the new seedlings, the seed on rocky soil germinated but quickly died, that which fell on the path the birds ate, but what fell on good ground grew and brought forth grain. The disciples ask Jesus why he speaks to the crowd in parables, because they don’t understand.
I expect many came more out of curiosity than to hear the message. Some came to see how they could trap him, and others came to listen and learn. Jesus is the sower in the parable and the people (we) are the various types of ground. I wonder what kind of soil we are at various times in our lives. How much do we actually listen to the sermon on Sunday? How much will you recall when you close your Bible and this message when you are finished?
Lord, what kind of soil am I today?
Lord, make the soil of our hearts soft to you and fertile so that we may hear and understand when you speak to us through the Word. Amen. — REJ
