Friday May 26th, 2017 Psalm 68:1-10,32-35
Awesome is God?he gives power and strength to his people. (verse 35)
My youngest son has a rare form of muscular dystrophy. He struggles to master the most basic movements of mobility. He looks with wonder at his younger sister as she easily runs circles around him. But Emmitt has a joy about him. Rather than retreat in a sense of self-pity, Emmitt embraces everything his life has to offer.
I thought about him as I read our theme verse. Emmitt may never know the joy of running through a cool sprinkler on a hot summer day, but he will know joy. It can sometimes be easier to focus on what we cannot do rather than the gift of what we can do. One of the joys of our faith is knowing that we have a God who strengthens us to utilize the gifts we have been given. All the baptized have the gift of the Holy Spirit to do things we once thought impossible.
Doctors once told us that our son would never walk. The day he took his first steps with the aid of a walker his face was a burst of expressive joy. As grateful tears streamed down my cheeks I was once again reminded: How awesome is our God!
Dear Lord, you are indeed awesome and we thank you for your many gifts. Amen. — VB
