Called to Learn

In the midst of St. Paul’s powerful words about the wisdom of God and humans, we are asked to consider our own call in life. Many speak pompous words, convinced they have the right and only answer. What about you and me?

Early in my life, I felt others knew a lot more than I did. So I tended to say little and simply listen. I remember hearing “we Lutherans do not have a corner on the truth”! So, as much as I cherish my Lutheran heritage, in my calling I have been willing to learn from the views of other heritages of the faith.

Obviously for St. Paul, the wisdom of God far surpasses the ideas of humans. Other world religions think that somehow we humans need to figure out a way to get through to the Almighty. But the Christian faith reverses that approach. Instead, God takes the initiative to come to us in Christ.

So, “consider your own call”; none of us are wise enough to know everything about God. But we can learn from others. Yet the heart of the faith is really a gift from God and sufficient for every need.

Gracious God of all wisdom, thank you for your revelation of faith, demonstrated in Christ Jesus. Help me to "consider my call" and be willing to continually learn. Amen. — AAG
