Sunday January 8th, 2017 Baptism of Our Lord Matthew 3:13-17
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. (verse 13)
In this text, John asks to be baptized by Jesus, but it is Jesus who needs the baptism before he begins his ministry. You’ll notice when you read that John agreed to do what Jesus asked.
It’s a challenge to take on leadership. John had done his job to prepare the way for Jesus and now faced the request to baptize Jesus, even if he wants Jesus to baptize him. He may have wondered if his job was done.
Having been in Toastmasters awhile, I’d inquired about the responsibilities involved with coaching another club. The situation presented itself and I had to decide whether to take it. Did I possess the necessary skills? Did I have the time? After a good deal of thought and prayer, I decided to go ahead.
Not long after I took on the position, my father went into hospice care. I needed to travel several times a week to spend time with him. I couldn’t do both. Another member offered to cover the coaching for the interim and I was grateful for her help.
What task are you called to? How will you answer?
Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus. We ask for courage to be leaders in our own places. Amen. — CRW
