Three letters, powerful letters, forming a word, a word that changes everything. Everything!
“Long ago God spoke?” (verse 1) is the powerful way the writer of Hebrews tells us about the majesty and pageantry of the whole Old Testament witness to God. From the words of creation through the prophets, God spoke, nurtured and disciplined the people of Israel.
Then there is that one little word-but-a change in direction to remind us of something else to come. A new way God speaks to us. Not through the prophets but through the Son himself. There is no longer a need to look to the past. Now we look to the present and to the future.
But-a change in direction to the unknown. Sometimes that can be a scary change of direction because it will lead us into the unknown. To a place where we may never have been before. But-that word will then lead us to faith. To the fulfillment of the promises of God. To peace. God’s hope! God’s joy! God’s grace! God’s peace!
How often do we use that powerful word, but, to be held back. Let us instead use this day and this word to take a step in faith to the future.
Lord God, help me to hear how you speak to me this day through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. — JKU
